Ella Tanner SMITH
1877 - 1918

Ella Tanner was born in Sutter Creek, California on January 2, 1877. She was educated in the public schools of Amador City and then graduated from the Sierra Normal College in Auburn. She studied art at the Crocker Art School in Sacramento, the Mark Hopkins Institute in San Francisco, and privately with R. Max Meyers. After marrying Z. P. Smith, she settled in Berkeley and maintained a studio in her home. In ill health for many years, she fatally shot herself at her home in Berkeley on April 21, 1918. An accomplished oil painter, her canvases are meticulously rendered and highly detailed. Although rare, her works include portraits, landscapes, and scenes of the San Francisco Bay area.
