Charles L. A. SMITH
1871 - 1937

Charles L. A. Smith was born in Auburn, Michigan on Jan. 11, 1871. He was a self-taught painter and spent his early career in Chicago. He visited California some time before 1908 but did not actually settle in Los Angeles until the 1920s. He was art director of the Jonathan Club in Los Angeles at the time of his death on November 26, 1937. Primarily a landscape painter, Smith also painted portraits. Member: California Watercolor Society; Boston Art Club; California Art Club. Exhibited: Panama Pacific International Exposition, 1915; California Liberty Fair, 1918; Ebell Club (Los Angeles), 1921; California State Fair, 1930; Santa Cruz Art League, 1934. Works held: Orange County (CA) Museum; University of Maine Art Gallery; Lawrence (MA) Museum; Gardena High School.
