Artist Biography

1868 - 1938

Marius A. Schmidt was born in Kalding, Denmark on June 9, 1868. As a young man he worked in the postal service in Copenhagen. He studied painting with Jorgensen and Möller in Denmark. His family’s opposition to an art career led him to America in 1886. Two years later he settled in San Francisco and began painting prolifically. After the disaster of 1906, he moved across the bay to Oakland where he worked as an interior decorator. He settled in Laguna Beach in 1924 and established a studio. Due to anti-German sentiment, he then anglicized his name to Smith. The artist died in Los Angeles on December 4, 1938. Schmidt became a competent painter of coastals, landscapes, floral still lifes, scenes of the San Francisco Bay area and Laguna in oil, watercolor, and pastel. Exhibited: San Francisco Art Ass'n, 1917-18. Works held: Orange County (CA) Museum.
