Artist Biography

1857 - 1930

Mary E. Nicholl was born in California in April 1857, the daughter of John Nicholl, founder of the city of Richmond, CA. After graduation from Mills College in 1877, Mazie (as she was called) studied at the School of Design in San Francisco and continued in Paris at Académie Merson during 1912-18. While a resident of Oakland, she painted landscapes, still lifes, and scenes of the East Bay. She was an active club woman and successful business woman. She married Jan Kruger in 1927 and continued to live in Oakland until her death in March 1930. Exhibited: California State Fair, 1887-1901; Mechanics' Institute (San Francisco) and San Francisco Art Ass'n, 1893-1902; California Bldg, World's Columbian Expo (Chicago), 1893; California Midwinter Int'l Expo, 1894; Oakland Industrial Expo, 1896; Berkeley Art Ass'n, 1908; Cap and Bells Club, 1913. Works held: Mills College.
