Ethel GRAU
1905 - 1988

Ethel Valencia Grau was born in Oakland, California on April 21, 1905, the daughter of artists Mabel Eadon and Manuel Valencia. Ethel was taught to paint by her parents and continued her studies at the California School of Fine Arts, California College of Arts and Crafts, San Jose State College, University of California Extension, and with George Post and Charles Horton. A longtime resident of Fremont, California and the widow of Dr. Eugene Grau, she died in neighboring Concord on July 26, 1988. Her work consists mainly of early California historical subjects. During her last years she painted a series of Mother Lode watercolors.
