1878 - 1945
Katherine Miller Gillespie was born in Crawford County, Missouri on March 15, 1878. She was listed as an artist in the San Jose City Directory of 1900 and soon thereafter married Harvey Gillespie. She was a close friend and painting partner of artist Bertha Stringer Lee and served as maid of honor at Bertha's wedding. After attending the California School of Fine Arts for three years, she continued there as an instructor from 1915-18. During the early 1930s taught garden sculpture at the Western Women's Club. Mrs. Gillespie died in San Francisco on September 13, 1945. Her small easel paintings include garden scenes, florals, and scenes of the San Francisco Bay area. One of her best works is a mural in the Children’s Ward at University of California Hospital, San Francisco.
