Brother Fidelis CORNELIUS
1877 - 1962

Brother Fidelis Cornelius (né Hermann Emanuel Braeg) was born in Emmishofen, Switzerland on May 3, 1877. He immigrated with his parents to Philadelphia in 1883. After becoming a member of the Christian Brothers, he moved to California in 1906 and became an art teacher at St Mary's College (then in Oakland), a position he was to hold for the rest of his life. He studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute, California College of Arts and Crafts, and University of California at Berkeley (M.A. in 1921). He is best known as the author of two volumes on the life of Wm Keith entitled, Keith, Old Master of California (1942). He generally signed his watercolors and pastels: BFC. Brother Cornelius died in an automobile accident near Placerville, CA on January 29, 1962. Exhibited: California Palace of Legion of Honor, 1945). Works held: St Mary's College (Moraga, CA).
