1873 - 1957
Bertha Luce was born near Chico, California on February 11, 1873. At age four she moved nearby to Ukiah with her parents. She married Forest Emery in 1892 and for forty-two years (1903-45) ran a millinery business in Ukiah while painting in her leisure. A pupil of Grace Hudson and Lorenzo P. Latimer, she painted in both oil and watercolor until 1915 and then painted only watercolors. Her works are mainly of the flowering fields and mountains of Mendocino County. Mrs. Emery died in Ukiah, California on October 29, 1957. Exhibited: San Francisco Art Ass'n, April 1906; Saturday Afternoon Club (Ukiah), 1930 (solo); California State Library, 1936 (solo); Golden Gate International Exposition, 1939 (gold medal); Mendocino County Historical Society, 1987 (retrospective).
