Dorothy Visju ANDERSON
1874 - 1960

Dorothy Visju Anderson, a painter and writer, was born in Oslo, Norway on October 23, 1874. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and with William Merritt Chase. After 1910 she divided her time between Chicago and Los Angeles before settling in the latter in 1924. Primarily a portrait painter, she had an art school in Hollywood and exhibited at various Los Angeles galleries until her death on September 4, 1960. Member: San Diego Fine Art Society; California Art Club; Los Angeles Art Ass'n; Beverly Hills Art Ass'n (founder-president). Exhibited: Chicago Art Guild, 1918 (prize); Stendahl Gallery (Los Angeles), 1924; Oakland Art Gallery, 1931; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1937 (medal). Works held: Hollywood Women's Club; Elks Club (Los Angeles).
