Artist Biography

Mary E. CALL
1864 - 1957

Mary Emaline Call was born in Algona, Iowa on October 5, 1864. She studied in New York City with William Merritt Chase and in Paris at Académie Colarossi. She was a resident of Old Lyme, Connecticut before moving to Los Angeles in 1915. By the 1920s she had moved north to San Anselmo where she became active in the local art scene and cofounded the Marin Society of Artists in 1927. She died in San Anselmo on December 29, 1957. Her subject matter indicates travel to Paris, Picardy and Bruges. Exhibited: California Art Club; Kanst Gallery (Los Angeles), 1915; San Francisco Art Ass'n, 1916; Santa Cruz Art League, 1929, 1934; California State Fair, 1930; Golden Gate International Exposition, 1939; Society for Sanity in Art, California Palace of Legion of Honor, 1940. Works held: Scottish Rite Hall (Los Angeles).
